Growing media wins prestigious award at event

A growing media designed specifically for hanging baskets that incorporates the water management additive Celcote was praised at Four Oaks and awarded the Best New Professional Product.

Sylvamix Hanging Basket professional growing media from Melcourt was recently launched and has been developed with moisture retention in mind.

Melcourt Technical Director Catherine Dawson explains that water management in hanging basket composts is a vital issue. “We wanted this new hanging basket growing media to really perform, hence why we chose to include Certis’ Celcote - the market leading product for water management - in the mix.”

She adds that the confined growing environment really puts the growing media to the test. “There is only a small volume of compost to a larger volume of foliage; so water management is crucial.”

Melcourt undertook trials to establish the effectiveness of Celcote within the mix, before taking the step to include it in Sylvamix. “The results from our trials showed real positive benefits. The baskets were able to better retain the moisture and we are delighted that the performance has been recognised at Four Oaks,” says Catherine.

Certis’ Account Manager Martin Donnelly adds, “The inclusion of Celcote in this hanging basket professional mix is great news for growers. The Four Oaks award is well deserved.

“With the government’s drive towards being peat free by 2015, sustainable peat free growing media is more important than ever before,” says Martin.
