A new farming app to help commercial producers manage slug control treatments has been launched by Certis.
The timely introduction of the Slug Pellet Calculator comes as newly-drilled crops are at their most vulnerable to slug attack, and when pelleting restrictions are at their height.
The multi-platform tool is the first app specifically designed to support a slug control programme to be used in conjunction with an agronomist.
The app enables users to input ferric phosphate and/or metaldehyde application rates, and dates, according to the crop. It calculates how much active has been used, and notifies growers how much may still be possible to apply within the advised limits, for that season and calendar year.
Metaldehyde autumn dose rates are calculated separately from annual limits so the app is able to notify users if they are close to the advised limit of 210g metaldehyde active per hectare, as well as the 700g limit of active per hectare for the year.
The app will suggest replacing treatments with ferric phosphate (Sluxx or Derrex) when growers are close to the maximum metaldehyde allowance.
It’s easy to download, is very user friendly, and can be used both online and offline, so data can be recorded even in areas with poor internet coverage.
Pellet applications will be collated, calculated, reported and e-mailed back to the user. It has the potential to transform integrated slug pellet management, according to Certis product manager, Inez Cornell.
“The app accounts for past treatments and enables growers to plan applications ahead, she says, “It will save time and hassle and we’ve already had initial positive feedback from growers using it in the field.
“It’s a useful tool to use in conjunction with agronomists to help manage applications in light of all the present issues surrounding slug control,” says Inez.
